My Bali and Indonesian experience- By Trevor Paul ( June 2013)
I loved every minute. What an amazing place full of a mazing people. I was like a sponge taking it all in and I feel energized by the place. I was so inspired by the spiritual and cultural side of Bali I got ink in honour of Barong – see pic. My best memory of Sumbawa was paddling in too late one night, after dark. The water was full of phosphorescent plankton and glowing shrimps and jellies… that glow around your hands when you paddle. And the sky is a full milky way vista reflecting in bath tub warm water. I had 5 foot Nungas to myself for five hours one day. Never seen anything like it. Those mechanical, freight train barrels looming on the horizon drawing near… And the raw power of Lakey Peak (even on a “small” 5′ day) is something I have to experience again.
I ate good food every day, met good people, hooked up with a beautiful Javanese woman who I scooted around Bali with for two weeks. Had a few jols in Kuta with drunk Ozzies and Seppos, shopped in Seminyak. Got dropped in on by locals at Ulus, given thrubbings on shallow reefs at Impossibles and Nunga Doros – but also caught the best waves of my life.
