True Blue is helping Mike get there, you should to!
Mike Schlebach, respected Cape Town big wave charger, needs our help to get him to the Titans of Mavericks event in California. He has made it onto a list of 36 of the best in the world, but there’s more.
By some truly amazing feats of balls-to-the-wall charging at Mavs in 2009 and 10, Mike has made it onto a list of 36 of the world’s BEST big wave surfers, from which 24 are being selected to compete in this year’s “Titans of Mavericks” event at Mavs in California.
Twiggy and Chris Bertish are already through, with Frank and Josh hoping to make the cut.
Mike is in his mid 30’s – the peak age for big wave surfing – but he is running out of time to pursue his dream of becoming a pro-surfer. This is his last shot! (Ironically, it’s also his first shot).
To get into the last 24 will be tough, but this guy is a bonafide contender. A true fighter, tough and determined. Like the guys who have gone before him he wants to go back and spend some time swinging his axe at the big trees called Mavericks, Jaws and (hopefully) Cortez Bank.
We know he can do it. He always turns heads wherever he surfs. He deserves a chance, he’s one of our FINEST and the big wave community think his dream is worth investing in! (He didn’t ask for help by the way).
To expand on his CV, Mike was the Cape Town big wave community’s first choice for the seven slots allocated to locals for this year’s ASP BWWT event at Dungeons. Sadly, it didn’t due to a lack of appropriate conditions.
Mike is a husband to Belinda, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend to many and the owner of a small business that seeks to create jobs and do business with sustainable integrity. He’s a Kommetjie local for life and the president of the newly formed “Kommetjie Surf Club.”
Mike is well liked because he’s a humble, respectful, kind, good guy who shoots straight.
Earlier this year R85,000 was raised in less than 2 weeks for Ruth and Max Armstrong to represent SA at the world junior games in South America. Mike’s not the first and he’s not the last. Pay it forward.
