Kelly’s budget beach stays in South-Africa.

True Blue Surf & Island Travel’s intern Kelly, visited some great budget beach stays along the Garden Route.

It’s definitely worth it to keep these accommodations in mind for your next trip!

Mosselbay Backpackers

Mosselbay Backpackers lays a 5 minute walk from the beach, in a quiet neighbourhood. There is a small pool, a nice bar with a pool- and foosball table and a desk where people can make reservations for sharkcagediving, sandboarding, or all kind of other activities.

The rooms were spacious and very clean. They also have a private bathroom with a good shower. Mosselbay Backpackers serves a la carte breakfast. There’s plenty of choice on the menu. You can also go to the bar for a snack like fish and chips. Besides that there is a self-catering kitchen for communal use.

The rates are between R120 for a bed in a dormitory and R495 for a double room with private bathroom.

 Stone Cottage, Plettenberg Bay

Stone Cottage is an old house (more than 100 years) that is redecorated in an amazing way. It’s really rustique, with old pictures of the house and previous owners. There’s a dog, Pietie, who welcomes every visitor, like it or not. The beach is located in about a 5 minute drive with the car.

The place has a small jacuzzi on the terrace that can be used by everyone who stays at Stone Cottage. There are no breakfast facilities, but every room has their own kitchen so you can prepare everything you want. If you’re in the Hilda or Leonard room you’ll have an electrical wok and microwave. The other rooms have a fully equipped kitchen.

“Stone Cottage was something completely different then the Backpackers but I really enjoyed my stay over there. There are fewer people and you have more privacy. Great place if you’re fan of a rustique, vintage environment.”

Beach Music, Jeffreys Bay

This is the ideal place for surfers. The wave Supertubes is actually at the end of the garden of Beachmusic. You cross the garden, go down some stairs and you’re at the beach. Simple as that.

Beachmusic has a nice terrace with a view over Supertubes. It also has a big lounge area where all the guests can relax. They don’t offer breakfast but there is a communal kitchen where you can prepare and eat your own dishes. Most of the rooms also have a little, private kitchen

The rate varies between R350 per night for a studio or R 550 for an apartment to R2000 per night for the penthouse.

“Beachmusic is a cosy place with a great atmosphere. I would definitely recommend this place to surfers or younger people who  wants to stay some nights in Jeffreys Bay.”

 Fynbos Garden Suite, Wilderness

Fynbos Garden Suite is an ideal place for romantic getaways. It’s a cottage on the property of an old, warm lady. It’s by far the most beautiful place I stayed. You look over the hills of Wilderness and can simply enjoy the peace and quietness of the place.

The cottage itself has really nice interior as well. There is a lot of space, with a fully equipped kitchen and a big bathroom. On the property there is a small pool and a braai area.

Because this cottage is the only accommodation there will be no other guests at the same time. The Suite is about a 10 minute drive to the beach and a 15 minute drive to the city centre of Wilderness.

“Fynbos Garden Suite is really a good choice if you’re looking for peace, quietness and beautiful nature. If you’re searching for a place with a lot of atmosphere and other people, this is not the good place for you.”

 Zoete Inval, Hermanus

Zoete inval is a big building where the patio is the central area. At one side there are the backpackers and on the other side there is the guesthouse. In the guesthouse there is a lounge area for all the guests and it’s also at that place were breakfast is served.

At the patio you’ll find the reception. You can also book different activities at this place, like sharkcagediving. Here you will also find some braaifacilities. The rooms are spacious and clean. There is a communal kitchen for everyone’s use. Zoete Inval is situated a 5 minute drive from the beach.

“Zoete Inval did remind me a bit at Mosselbay Backpackers. The rooms were very clean and it was nice sitting at the little patio.”
