True Blue Surf & Island Travel at Rolling Retro
True Blue Travel Dutch Intern Madelon Jansen was at Rolling Retro last sunday: ” It was really a amazing day.. Great to see the surfers on retro surfboards and the party was so much fun!!!”
The Llandudno locals and a large crew of spectators flocked to the sun drenched beach, many dressed in their grandparents’ rejected retro attire.
This year the waves were a little chunkier than previously. Most surfers said hello to a fat lip on the head or the Gat sandbank at some point in their heat.
This added to the entertainment value of the day, which was already outlandish, whacky and a whole lot of fun as surfers, young and old, hot and … well not so hot, strutted their stuff.
The local bodyboard crew, the hooded deeks, added to the carnage with their attempts at riding waves on croc whitewater boats. With the bigger surf we were lucky to have only one snapped board with Jeaque Smit in heat 1 breaking a coveted Spowy.
Most surfers were avoiding the bigger older Whitmores, until the Pro Heat, where Roosta and Michael Grendon showed the crowd what those old boards can do under the right feet.
The ice-cold Black Labels flowed, the afternoon faded into night and the retro moved from surf to party as the crowd enjoyed local music from the Larter Brothers, Bilderberg Motel and the most retro DJ Ike.
Most people did not want to leave, but Monday and the real world loomed. There were some winners of course and winning the biggest prize of a Carling Black Label 76 inspired single fin, dubbed the Zamalek Express was Ryan Leigh. The guy ripped his heat for the surfer of the day award.
