Subject: The ultimate surf trip that never happened.

To avoid beating around the bush, I will get to the point.

My father and I began an epic life changing, character shaping, journey about 4 short years ago: We started surfing. Since then our lives have changed dramatically for the better, and we discovered new and exciting ways to enjoy and be in awe of life. We live on the south coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, with an abundance of stunning winter waves, great for weekends and holidays, when the working-class Joe can go an enjoy a (hopefully) uncrowded surf. Living there with a reputation for wild and heavy waves, we got pretty good pretty quickly. For many this would be enough, but like all surfers we are driven like moths to a flame to the Mecca of the surfing world that is Indonesia. Now this may be a quenchable goal for some people, but two major factors are stopping my father and I from taking that ultimate pilgrimage: 1) We are a family of 6, with 4 offspring needing school and university fees, making the near R30 000 trip per person, a mile out of realistic hopes – even for just us two. 2) In order to save that kind of money, it would take more than a couple of years, which is again not going to happen, as my poor father is already in his 50’s and won’t be able to enjoy Indo-like waves for much longer, and I as a 19 year old student am unable to scratch together R60 000.

So in a loving and brave effort my poor mother offered up her life savings and then some, in order to send us on the trip, as a 50th birthday gift to my father. I went online, organised an amazing trip just for us, found tickets and funny enough it was with True Blue that we tried to book. Very courageously (and to my utter dismay) my father declined the gift because he said that “it was too much to spend on just two people, and he can’t happily use all of that money that we couldn’t actually afford to do. To me it was an utter heartbreak because I had already decided in my mind and heart “I am going to Indonesia” and arranged every detail and an entire itinerary, and just one click away from buying the flights. For my father it was knowing that he just gave up the trip of a lifetime, and possibly the last chance he will get to surf Indonesia, because of his selflessness.

In my desperation to make this trip a reality I entered a competition with True Blue writing this essay in a gallant attempt to save that dream, only to find that the competition had closed. Greg, the person who took the time to get back to me even tried his best to organize something special just for us just to make our dream a possibility, but it could still not be put into action.

So my dream holiday, dream vacation, dream surf trip and dream dream dream is to go to Indonesia with my father, and experience what all the surf movies, dreams, pictures, videos and fantasies are all about for ourselves – and especially to let my dad see it himself – and not feel the way he would, if I was to go one day when he’s 70 and frail, without him.

I pray this competition could make our dream come true.
