True Blue Surf & Island Travel at Wavescape Artboard Project

Yesterday True Blue Surf & Island Travel was at the surfboard art exhibition at Superette in Woodstock for the ocean charity auction, hosted by comedian Rob Van Vuuren.

Mikhael Subotzky and Alice Edy and surfing photographer Alan van Gysen are newcomers to the project, joining Roger Ballen, Manuela Gray, Kim Longhurst and Scott Robertson, and Claire Homewood and Sergio Rinquist.

Murray, the veteran satirical artist and perennial crowd favourite, has come on board again with a hard-hitting political statement that is bound to intrigue and irritate. He joins Ballen (the creative force behind Die Antwoord music video ‘I Fink You Freeky’), tattoo specialist Gray, and artist provocateur Peter van Straten in the project, which is part of the Wavescape Surf Festival, presented by Pick n Pay and supported by the Save Our Seas Foundation, WWF-SASSI, Jack Black Beer and glacéau vitaminwater.

The surfboard for 2013 that forms the canvas for the artists comes from a new innovation in surfboard design – the Shred Stick, a 6’0 high performance shape.

Hicks works with old recycled wrought iron and mild steel from his studio in an old art-deco cinema in Cape Town to fashion the festival’s first metal surfboard. Bertish has turned his surfboard into a cultural weapon by covering the board in animal skins like a Zulu shield. Van Gysen plays with the chemical interaction of photography and surfboard design by fixing a sumptuous underwater image within the resin that coats his surfboard.
