No surf, no problem. The Mentawai Islands are a chain of about seventy islands, off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. So here are few things you can do on land;
- Go fishing, it will be as if you are in fishing paradise. The mentawais waters are home to so many species some of them being the Black Marlin, Giant Trevally, King Mackerel and trust me when I say the list could go on.
- Ocean sports, so if you really want to take a break from surfing you could always go a different route. Kayak, stand up paddle board or go scuba diving. You can explore hidden lagoons or coastlines and secluded coves. There most certainly will be something to feed your sense of adventure.
- Explore the jungle; Mentawai’s Islands are homes to lush jungles where you can take guided treks/trails deep into the ecosystem, where you will find wild boars, black spotted dear and many more beautiful creatures. The wildlife spotting will blow you away as the island has some of world’s largest snakes and water dragons, it will be worth the adventure.
- You will find highly adorned ethnic tribes who live deep within the islands; often these tribes are only accessible via river. Be opened minded and visit an indigenous tribe, you will experience a different culture, learn new skills and see how different parts of the island live.
- Or You can just pray for some surf!
